This original art artwork is inspired by the ever-changing sea and the powerful weather of the coast. Living beside the sea, with views across open water, it is impossible not to be affected by the conditions around you. Recent weeks of strong winds, restless seas and crashing waves found their way into my imagination and inspired this dramatic scene of tall sailing ships battling their way through the storm.
The ships are shown under full sail as they plough through rough waters, their sails billowing in the strong coastal winds. There is a sense of movement and energy throughout the scene, contrasting with the fragile intricacy of the ships themselves.
One of my favourite details when drawing sailing ships is the rigging. Against the sky, the countless ropes and lines form an intricate network that reminds me of fine cobwebs stretched between leaves and branches. They are delicate and almost ethereal, yet they are an essential part of these magnificent vessels and their ability to harness the power of the wind.
I wanted the artwork to capture that fascinating combination of strength and delicacy — towering ships driven forward by powerful winds, set against the unpredictable force of the sea, while every piece of rigging remains finely detailed.
Although inspired by the real experience of living beside the sea, this is an imagined maritime scene rather than a depiction of a particular harbour or historical event. It is an appreciation of sailing ships, rough seas and the enduring relationship between people, wind and water.
