This original pen and ink artwork is inspired by a recent trip to Salzburg, Austria. Of all the experiences during the visit, this was perhaps my favourite time – wandering through the narrow streets as evening turned into night.
Salzburg's historic streets take on a completely different character after dark. Decorative shop signs catch the light, windows and street lamps create reflections and deep shadows, while the tall buildings seem to rise into the darkness above the narrow lanes.
This part of the Judengasse street just off of Mozartplatz seemed perfect for intricate architecture, illuminated signs and interplay of light and shadow creating a scene that feels both lively and wonderfully atmospheric, while the horse and carriage delivers movement and shadow. You can almost hear the clip clop sounds of their hooves.
For me, this is Salzburg at its most evocative – a city best explored on foot, when the daytime crowds have faded and the old streets begin to glow.
