This fine art print is based on an original pen and ink drawing of Neuschwanstein Castle, the romantic fairytale castle in Bavaria. Perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop beneath the Bavarian Alps, its brilliant white walls and tall, slender towers stand out against the dark mountain forests. It’s understandable why it has been an inspiration to many artists and creators over the years, including Walt Disney for his Kingdom Castle.
The castle looks even more spectacular from above, with the aptly named Swan Lake (Alpsee) lying behind it and the surrounding mountains stretching into the distance. But it was the forests themselves that caught my imagination just as much as the castle.
Rather than attempting to reproduce the landscape exactly, I wanted to create something more timeless and atmospheric. The trees may not all be the species you would actually find in this part of Bavaria, but they represent how I imagined the setting – a quiet forest beneath the castle, with a solitary figure resting in the shade.
Perhaps he's the prince waiting for his maiden.
More likely, it's me trying to escape the tourist hordes below.
The result is a romantic interpretation of one of Germany's most famous castles, combining the dramatic Alpine landscape with the timeless fantasy that Neuschwanstein seems to inspire.
